WALTER STROM
1916 - 2009
Walter Hugo Strom, beloved husband of Gladys Strom of Bow Island, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2009 at 93 years of age. He is survived by his wife Gladys, his children Sylvia, Elaine Acosta, Phil (Janet), Ray (Lois), Al (Lynn), Joan (Jim) Babe, Lori (Rick) Dykstra, daughter-in-law Laura (Harry) Kroeker, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Agnes (Sig) Odland, and Alice, brothers Vern (Dorothy) and Wilf, and sister-in-law Ruth Strom. He was predeceased by his parents, Nils and Elna Strom, his sisters, Agda Hallgren, Edla Carlson, and Dagny; brothers, Wallace, Clarence, and Harry; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Standerwick), Rose, Mildred, and Dorothy (Pearce); brothers-in-law Ben Hallgren, and Herb Carlson; granddaughter Ellen Strom and niece Valerie Strom. Walter was born January 8, 1916 on the family farm south of Burdett. He lived and farmed in that area until 1967 when he sold his farm and moved to Bow Island where he bought farm land which he rented out. He was active in church, community and political affairs including the local and district boards of the Evangelical Free Church, the Southern Alberta Bible Camp board, local and provincial Sugar Beet Growers boards, Councillor and Mayor of Bow Island, and Alberta Social Credit as a board member. He was involved for many years with the Gideons, presenting Bibles to Grade 5 students in the County of Forty-Mile No. 8. Walt loved taking on personal challenges. He took up motorcycling long before it was fashionable. Neither rain nor snowdrifts nor blizzards would keep him from appointed meetings. He pursued challenges such as driving on steep coulee banks, trying out his footing on cliff edges, or climbing trees at 80+ years. He chaired meetings willingly, no matter how difficult the topic at hand. Walt loved to travel and was not daunted by undertaking a month-long trip as far as Nova Scotia in 1967 with his wife and seven children, driving across Canada with a six-person trailer and a truck topper as accommodations for the family. In later years he and Gladys enjoyed winter stays in Sky Valley Park, CA. No one living in Bow Island during the 70's and 80's will forget the "putt-putt" of Walt's tractor as he levelled the quarter section northwest of town, especially when he started working early on Saturday mornings. In later years his hobby, with the help of his brother Clarence, became the restoration of the 1917 Titan tractor originally owned by his father. For a time it was entered in local parades, driven by himself or his son Al. Walter was a faithful husband and father. He held marriage in high esteem. His love for Gladys was obvious, especially as they grew older together. Visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always welcomed. He was interested in what they were doing and often found ways to tease them. He enjoyed jokes and loved to laugh. Walter will be remembered as a man of great personal integrity. He leaves a legacy of consistent and strong faith in God, an inquiring and quick mind, and a commitment to hard work. He was generous with his resources. He lived his citizenship responsibilities to the fullest and he accomplished much. He will be missed. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at the Evangelical Free Church, 214 - 4th Avenue West, Bow Island on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, between 9:30 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. Private family Interment will follow. A Celebration of Walter's life will be held at the Evangelical Free Church on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Mike De Ridder officiating. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Walter's name may be made to The Gideons, PO Box 3619 Stn Main, Guelph, ON N1H 9Z9, or to Southern Alberta Bible Camp, Box 99, Lomond, AB T0L 1G0.

TREASA SIMPSON
September 8, 1924 - February 27, 2009
Mrs. Treasa Simpson, beloved wife of the late Delbert Simpson, passed away at the Bow Island Health Centre on Friday, February 27, 2009, at the age of 84 years. She was born in Hungary on September 8, 1924 to loving parents Steve & Elizabeth Onody. She will be forever missed in the hearts of her three children; two daughters, Dalyce (Garth) Swennumsom, Marla (Mike Finch) Simpson and one son, Sheldon Simpson; her grandchildren, Barton (Angela Hooper) Simpson, Andria Simpson, Clayton Cameron, Laura (Aaron) Chute, Aaron Swennumson, Nathan (Darcey) Swennumson, Shane (Julie) Swennumson; seven great-grandchildren, Taryn, Madelyn, Jillian, Jonah, Isaac, Jori and Eastyn; as well as her brother Alec (Irene) Onody. Treasa was predeceased by her parents, Steve & Elizabeth Onody; husband, Delbert; daughter-in-law, Pat Simpson; son-in-law, Bob Cameron and her sister, Helen Dutrisac. In her early years, Treasa worked side by side with Delbert on the farm engaging in all of the duties of the farm. For a time she even drove the sugar beet truck. It wasn't until later in life that her love for her Hungarian heritage was evident through the compassion shown to her children and grandchildren. No one could ever make cabbage rolls like her and she often made pots of them when the family was together. She was the 'mother' of all worry warts and always seemed to know what was going on in the kids lives. Her April Fools pranks became legend among family and friends. As an excellent seamstress, she created and sewed cloths for her family, enjoyed a past time of embroidery, quilting and crocheting and spent hours grooming her fabulous flower garden. People would stop as they drove past the farm to admire the labors of her green thumb. Her garden was huge and the produce willingly shared. Treasa was fun loving and enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing and hunting with Delbert including spoiling her grandchildren all the time. All the grandchildren have special memories of holidays, fishing trips, sleep overs and auction sales with Grama and Grampa. You never wanted to get on the wrong side of Treasa, especially once you knew she had earned the honor as the silver metalist for target shooting in the senior provincial games. In her retirement years, she took up golf and boosted about her 'hole-in-one' every opportunity she got. A celebration of Treasa's life will be held at St. Michael's Parish in Bow Island, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Father Fred Monk, officiating. A private family interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Bow Island Health Foundation, Bag 3990, Bow Island, Alberta, T0K 0G0.
