EDITH SMITH
1917 - 2010
Mrs. Edith May Smith, beloved wife of the late Mr. G.F. “Ted” Smith, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the age of 92 years. Edith was born on October 23, 1917, in Medicine Hat. As a young girl at the age of 9, her life changed with the passing of her parents. After this traumatic event she moved to Chicago where she lived with her aunt (Norris family) for many years. Edith later moved to British Columbia, once again living with an aunt. It was in B.C. where she met G.F. “Ted” Smith. They were later married and first settled in Red Deer and started a family. In 1957, they moved to Medicine Hat and continued raising their family. This would become their home for their remaining years. Edith was a lady with class who
carried herself well. She took pride in her appearance and always wore a smile. She was always happy and enjoyed her life. Perhaps this is why people were drawn to her as she made many close friends. Many hours were spent in the company of her family playing games and laughing with them. She loved to win and hated to lose! Sunday
afternoons were special because it meant time with family and time to play Mahjong. Those afternoons will never be forgotten. Edith was a giving person and never turned down an organization in need of a charitable donation. She loved Angels, and, in ways, was like an Angel herself, looking after everyone else. She will be deeply
missed by her children, Carol Schlaht and Edward (Monica) Smith; grandchildren, Carmen (Mike), Candace (Pat), Jason (Aleesha), Christine (Mike), Brad (Jamie) and Rachel (Curtis) as well as 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Teddy Smith; a daughter, Beverley Smith and a daughter in infancy, Bonnie Jean. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Barrett Scheske officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Edith’s name may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice.
