ANNIE RAE
February 12, 1909 - July 12, 2010
Devoted daughter, loving sister and sister-in-law, cherished aunt, compassionate teacher and treasured friend, Annie Ellen Katherine Rae passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, July 12, 2010, at the remarkable age of 101 years. She was born to James and Annie Rae on February 12, 1909. Annie was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Jim (Bea), Mac (Hanna), Bob
(Mary), Spencer; sister, Dorothy (Jack); two nieces, one nephew and one grand-niece. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marian as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Belonging to a pioneer family, Annie was raised and educated in Medicine Hat. She began her teaching career in Dunmore where she taught a full
complement of grades one through nine. She joined the staff of the Medicine Hat Public School District #76, and taught in the system for 41 years. Annie’s many assignments included all Elementary grades, Special Ed, Traveling Art Teacher and Supervisor, Vice Principal and
Principal - one of the first Medicine Hat Public School District’s female administrators. In 1954, she obtained her Bachelor of Education via summer school. After she retired, gardening, reading and traveling filled her life. Annie loved flowers and kept her yard picture perfect. Many will remember the lady in the “straw hat” mowing and watering a beautiful corner yard. Mysteries were her
absolute favorite read, although listening to the Secret Garden became a close second. There were many wonderful times spent in California with Dorothy, Jack, niece Rae Ann (Bob) and grand-niece Joan (Mark). After her sister’s passing, Annie remained in Medicine Hat. For many
years, every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 A.M., you could find Annie at the Co-op with dear friends Myrna, Lloyd and often Martha and Audrey. Annie loved visits from her nieces, Maxine (Bill), Meridel and nephew Doug’s wife, Lorna. For over 80 years, her home continued the Rae tradition of welcoming family and friends. When Annie
transitioned to an assisted living site, she was comforted to share outings, meals and friendship with her sister-in-law, Marian. Gifted with an amazing wit, Annie appreciated her nephew Bobby’s (Pat) vast repertoire of jokes and stories. She delighted in telling new friends
the reason she lived so long was that she never married! Last year, Annie’s 100th birthday was celebrated by family and friends. Besides her letter from the Queen, a particular highlight was 100 Tim-bits from special friends, Laurie and Ron. Those who knew Annie, knew she loved dilly bars and Tim-bits! Also missing their beloved aunt are
Bill, MaryEllen and their family. They, along with many family and friends, have been blessed to know Annie. She lived her life with integrity, generosity, compassion, humor and humility. She will forever remain an inspiration to us all! A Graveside Celebration of Annie’s life will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. with Gary Goran officiating. Those wishing to
attend the service should gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., on Saturday between 10:30 A.M. and 10:45 A.M. The procession to Graveside will depart at 10:50 A.M.
