JOHN MARSHALL
1947 - 2009
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Charles Patrick Marshall which occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2009. John died peacefully at the age of 61 at home in his sleep with Grace and sister, Fran and brother-in-law, Gene by his side. Left to mourn his passing are Grace, his wife of 35 years, the love of his life, two adoring daughters, Christine (Kevin) Seefried of Medicine Hat, Jacqueline Marshall (Martin, granddaughter, Marissa) of Brooks, loving son, Sean (Irelis), granddaughters, Madelin, Mila, grandson, baby Ian of Salinas, California. John is survived by his nine sisters and brothers, Mary (Danny ~ deceased) St. Onge, Fran (Gene) Matiation, Gerry (Linda) Marshall, David (Claire) Marshall, Allie (Rae) Turnbull, Tom (Gabe) Marshall, Bob (Karen) Marshall, Arlene (Randy) Scherer, Chris (Al) Beck as well as numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle John dearly. He will be sorely missed by his many, many friends, especially Table 6. John was born in Newport, Wales to Jack and Kathleen (nee Cross), came to Canada at the age of a year and a half. He was raised in Medicine Hat and attended McCoy High School. He managed the Medicine Hat Golf Course for many years, and was also a salesman for Supreme Windows for a time. For the last 17 years, John was a salesman for Glentel Communications. He was a born salesman, winning many awards and trips to Cancun, the Dominican Republic and Aruba. John treated each customer like his only customer and was well respected in his industry. He was a soft-spoken, gentle, good-natured man as well as a practical joker and the life of the party who saw the good in everyone. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was generous to a fault. John will truly be missed on those golf trips to Shelby, Cut Bank and Whitefish (and those crib games). How lucky we all were to have him in our lives. A Celebration of John's life will be held at the Medicine Hat Lodge, Main Ballroom (TransCanada Highway and Dunmore Road S.E.) on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Those attending are asked to dress in a casual manner and are encouraged to share special memories of John during the open mic. A heartfelt thanks is extended to the Medicine Hat Police Service for their compassion and caring efforts, the paramedics for their heroic efforts and to Robin of Victim's Assistance. People like you really do make a difference to others.

ROBERT MORTON
1941 - 2009
Robert Harold Morton, beloved husband of Alvina Morton of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family and friends at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the age of 67 years. Robert was born on May 20, 1941 in Kelfield, Saskatchewan, a son to proud parents, William and Jean Morton. Robert grew up on the family farm where he learned the value of a hard days work. On April 25, 1964, in Marengo, Saskatchewan, he was united in marriage to Alvina Walz. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of a daughter, Ladean. Robert enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, (RCAF) and served his country as an Electronic Tech for nearly 35 years from 1962 to 1995. During this time, he fulfilled postings to Germany, B.C., Ontario and endured a tour to the Golan Heights. While in Germany he enjoyed curling in bonspiels with friends, and when stationed in B.C., he braved the waters on his own boat, fishing for B.C. Salmon. In his retirement, Robert brushed up his farming knowledge by returning to his roots by farming with his brothers and driving the grain truck. While serving in the forces, his eyes had seen many battles...these battles provided the foundation that would strengthen him for a ten year battle with cancer which he eventually succumbed to. Robert's memory will be cherished in the hearts of his wife, Alvina Morton; daughter, Ladean (Bertrand) Guay and their children, Valerie and Jordan; brothers, Greg (Debbie) Morton, Donald (Dawn) Morton and Harry (Patricia) Morton; a special family friend, Rosa 'Mudi Rosie' Thome as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Jean Morton; a brother, Gerald Morton and by his mother and father-in-law, Frances and Martin Walz. A Celebration of Robert's Life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. with George Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Field of Honour at Hillside Cemetery. GEORGE MEHEDYN
1925 - 2009
Mr. George Mehedyn passed away while in the comforting care of the Alfred Egan Home in Bow Island on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at the age of 83 years. Along with his close friends in Youngstown and at the Alfred Egan Home, George will be remembered by his three sisters and their families. He was predeceased by his parents as well as three brothers and four sisters. George was born on April 27, 1925, in Duverney, Alberta. He moved into the Michener Centre in Red Deer in 1959 and lived there until moving to the Youngstown Home in 1988. George created many lasting friendships during his 20 years there. In February of 2008, George moved into the care of the Alfred Egan Home. During his time there, George enjoyed many trips to various places, many times back to visit his friends at Youngstown! He was very articulate when expressing himself, often pointing his finger or shaking his fist. George was always careful of his appearance, ensuring that his wallet was in his pocket and his ball cap was on! Though stubborn at times, George will be remembered for his kind heart and gentle nature. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so starting one hour prior to the service which will be held at the Alfred Egan Home, 1039 - 1 Street East in Bow Island on Friday, April 24, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Fred Monk officiating. Interment will follow at the Bow Island Cemetery. CLARENCE MAUCH
November 30, 1933 - November 9, 2007
Mr. Clarence Frederick Mauch, beloved husband of Helen, passed away at the Sunnyview Care Centre at the age of 73 years, with his family by his side. Clarence leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Monica Smith (Sam Thornhill) and Roxana (Jerry) Lachapelle; one son, Zachary Mauch (Sandy Traichel); seven grandchildren, Nick, Andrea and their father David Smith, Safira, Alyssa and Richard Lachapelle, Cameron and Landon Mauch along with their mother Michelle Kiefer, all of Medicine Hat. He is also survived by one sister, Amanda (Ed) Hunt of Calgary; one brother, Ed (Lorraine) Mauch of Medicine Hat; one sister-in-law, Alice Mauch of Sparwood, B.C. as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gotthielf and Paulina Mauch; three brothers, Oscar, Albert and Herb; one sister, Emilia. Clarence was born and raised in the Hilda District. He lived his first 14 years there before moving to Medicine Hat and finishing his education at Alexandra School. In 1958, Clarence married Helen Abraham. Clarence and Helen moved to British Columbia where they raised their children on the West Coast. The family returned to Medicine Hat in 1978. It was often said that Clarence could operate the controls on heavy equipment like he was playing a piano. He belonged to the Operating Engineer's Union and was also proud to have been a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years. Clarence always enjoyed a good card game and played often with his brother Eddy. Visiting family and friends was important to him. We were all entertained by his unique sense of humour. Clarence was a very kind-hearted man who loved and was loved by his family. The Service celebrating Clarence's life will be private for the family. Relatives and friends are invited to join with the family in a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Wuerfel Auditorium at South Country Village, 1720 Bell Street S.W., on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at 12:00 P.M. LESLIE PAUL MERRICK
August 8, 1951 - December 26, 2007
Mr. Paul Merrick of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully with his loving wife Jeanette by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer, on December 26, 2007, at the age of 56 years. Along with his wife, Paul leaves to cherish his memory two children, Eli (Nicole) Merrick and Jacquie (Ron) Martinez, both of Medicine Hat; three granddaughters, Brittany Martinez, Danielle Martinez and Elise Merrick; his mother, Marg Merrick as well as his father who recently passed away, Jack Merrick; brothers and sisters, Bernard (Mary-Louise) Merrick of Camrose, Josie (John) Weatherhead, Lorne (Gail) Merrick and Loretta (Armand) Gauthier, all of Medicine Hat. His memory will also live on through his extended family, as well as the many colleagues and students who respected and loved him. Paul attended school in the Medicine Hat Catholic School System, graduating from McCoy as the Student Union President. After extensive university, he returned to McCoy teaching Biology 30 along with some Science and Math for the next 30 years. On August 14, 1971, Paul married Jeanette Ellen Schneider in Medicine Hat, marking the start of 36 wonderful years together. He enjoyed driving to numerous destinations with Jeanette (who he playfully called "Moose"), especially to Nevada. Paul shared his love for traveling with others when he started organized Luxury Bus Tours in which he adopted the role as the 'Tour Leader'. He loved visiting with family and friends, as well as watching and playing sports of all kinds, especially hockey! He will be remembered as a fun-loving, gentle and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He was one man - but he changed the lives of many! ROBERT (BOB) MCLENNAN
March 9, 1919 - January 3, 2008
Robert Wilkinson McLennan was born on March 9, 1919, in Ingersoll, ON., and passed away on January 3, 2008, in Medicine Hat, AB., at the age of 88 years. Along with his loving wife, Beulah McLennan (nee Smith), Bob leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Clare (Herbert) Hotson of Kelowna, BC.; sister-in-law, Stephanie of Elk Point, AB., as well as many very special nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his mother and father, Elizabeth (nee Wilkinson) and Thomas McLennan; two sisters, Elizabeth and Jean; three brothers, Thomas, Allister and Roderick; sister-in-law, Helen McLennan; brothers-in-law, John Metzger and Walter Sokolowski as well as a nephew, Robert Metzger. Bob grew up in Paisley, ON., and joined the Bank of Montreal in Delhi, ON., in 1937. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve and spent over four years in service. During this time, he was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and at sea sailing aboard corvettes on convoy duty from Halifax south to Bermuda. After his discharge in 1945, Bob returned to work with the Bank of Montreal at Simcoe, ON. He married Beulah in 1946, and together they shared over 61 wonderful years together. During this time, Bob worked in Simcoe, Toronto, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Calgary, Edmonton and Westlock, finally coming to Medicine Hat in 1976. This is where he retired in 1983. Once in Medicine Hat, he became a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Shrine Club, Connaught Golf Club and also served on some civic committees. While in Toronto in 1952, Bob experienced some excitement while in his office when he was robbed at gunpoint by Edwin Alonzo Boyd, the leader of Toronto's infamous Boyd Gang of Bank Robbers. Boyd was finally captured, and Bob was subpoenaed to testify at the trial which sent Boyd to prison in Kingston, ON. He had many years of happy retirement while enjoying his outdoor hobbies of trailer camping, fishing, golf, hunting and especially bird watching. In honour of Bob's life, relatives and friends are invited to a come and go time of fellowship at Club Sierra, 4 River Ridge Drive N.W., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, between 2:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M. RIC MUNRO
June 17, 1948 - January 26, 2008
With sadness, we announce that Mr. Ric Munro, beloved husband of Rhonda (nee Ludwig) Munro, joined his mother in eternal peace while in the comfort of his home in Seven Persons, on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at the age of 59 years after a courageous battle with cancer. Along with his loving wife Rhonda, Ric leaves to cherish his memory four children, Richard (Connie) Munro and their children, Gavin, Lakyia and Hayden; Leah (Chuck) Ellis and their children, Cole and Tate; Gerald Munro and Christiann Munro. Ric is also survived by his father, Gerry Munro; one sister, Hope (Don) Boudreau; two brothers, Barry (Nikki) Munro and Gary Munro, as well as numerous extended family. He was predeceased by his mother Peggy and grandmother Birdie, who he held so dear. Ric was born in Belleville, Ontario on June 17, 1948. He was raised on Air Force bases, including Trenton, Ontario. It was an opportunity to play semi-pro hockey that brought Ric out West where he took a position at a Golf Club in Estevan, Saskatchewan meeting his love Rhonda. His career in Golf Courses took him to Swift current for the next ten years. In 1982, Ric moved to Medicine Hat as a superintendent with the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club. Then, in 1991, he started Pro-Grass Landscaping and later acquired Ernie's Small Engine Repair. Ric was always reaffirming the love he had for his family, especially the children and grandchildren. He was passionate about all sports, but was always drawn to hockey in particular, whether he was coaching or supporting. Ric enjoyed to travel, and never passed on an opportunity to create new friendships and re-kindle old ones. The memory of his enthusiasm will forever live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him! PATRICK JOSEPH MCBREARTY
July 17, 1937 - March 2, 2008
While surrounded by his family and in the comfort of his home, Mr. Patrick Joseph McBrearty, beloved husband of Mrs. Jean McBrearty of Medicine Hat, was called home to dwell in the house of the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the age of 70 years. Patrick was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 17, 1937, a son to Francis and Bridget McBrearty. Scotland was home...the place where Patrick was raised, educated and met his future wife, Jean Archibald. As young teenagers (Patrick 18 and Jean 17) when they first met, their romance bloomed and were married on Patrick's 21st birthday, July 17,1958. They would have celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year. In January of the following year, he was called to National Service to serve his country. In 1974, the family moved to Medicine Hat and have remained since that time. For many years, Patrick was employed as a pipefitter. His easy going disposition and jolly self proved to be a positive influence on his colleagues. He could always be heard singing while he worked. Patrick was a kind and gentle man and truly loved his family and grandchildren. He loved life and lived for every moment. His sense of humor was infectious to those around him and it was always accompanied by the smile that he wore. Although Patrick had experienced health issues, his demeanor and spirit would not break. He fought a good fight with his cancer and never complained. In short, was a loving husband, father, grandfather and Hero! Patrick's memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Jean of Medicine Hat; a daughter, Trish (Ken) Pirie of Medicine Hat and their children, Nicole (Wayne) Jones - (great-grandson, Kai, who grandpa was so fond of), Craig Pirie and Shaleigh Pirie; a son, James McBrearty of Medicine Hat and his children, Krista and Cameron; a daughter, Angela Hutchings of Medicine Hat and her daughter, Ashley; two sisters, Moira Conner and Eleanor Webster both of Toronto; a sister-in-law, Anne (James) Higgins of Scotland as well as numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and Scotland. 'Buddy' will also miss his master and the walks that he would faithfully take him on. Patrick was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Bridget McBrearty and a brother in infancy. IAN MCLEOD
1951 - 2008
Mr. Ian McLeod of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Mrs. Susan McLeod and father of Craig (Amanda) McLeod and their daughter Brianna, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the age of 56 years. He also leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Neil (June) McLeod and Alec (Diane) McLeod and their two sons, Scott and Mark, as well as an uncle, Tom Farquhar. Ian was a passionate man; especially when it came to flying a helicopter and riding a cutting horse. He was involved in the Canadian Cutting Horse Association and was a Past President of the Alberta Cutting Horse Association. Together with Les Little, Ian and Susan operated Rangeland Helicopters Inc. Through their partnership with the Southern Alberta Medic-Air Society, the company played an instrumental part in starting and maintaining HALO (the local Helicopter Air Rescue Program). Ian's memory will live on through family, friends and the many lives he touched. A time of celebration in memory of Ian will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at 1:00 P.M., with a time of fellowship to follow. KATHLEEN EMILY MARTIN

It is with sadness that Kay's family announce her passing on Sunday, March 23, 2008. She had resided in Calgary until recently when she moved to Medicine Hat in order to be closer to her family. Kathleen had been very active with the United Church, having served with the U.C.W. for many years. Her friends at Wild Rose United Church were quite dear to her. She also volunteered as a driver with Meals on Wheels and her family ask that memorial donations be made there in honour of Kathleen. Cherishing her memory are her sister, Dorothy Moss of Lakefield, ON; neices, Sonia Fabian, Maureen Johnson and Ruth Hotchkiss; nephew, David Moss and several great-nieces and nephews including Lori Lund and her children, Michael, Valerie, Andrew and Heather Leppke. Kathleen truly had a life well lived and she will be in our hearts forever. SHANE MATCHETT
1971 - 2008
Shane Joseph Matchett age 37 years, dearly beloved son of Delores Matchett and Eric (Betty) Matchett, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2008. He leaves to mourn his loss: son, Kallon Matchett; brother, Michael (Julia); nephew, Christopher Melnyk and special great nephew, Aiden; nieces, Skyler and Shea Matchett and their mother Wendy; the love of his life, Jody Popick, as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family. Shane was born in Medicine Hat on April 10, 1971. He attended St. Louis, St. Mary's and McCoy High School. Shane was a natural athlete, excelling at football and soccer in his youth. He loved camping and fishing, and thoroughly enjoyed his time on the rigs. Shane followed all sports avidly being a loyal fan of the Montreal Canadians and the Dallas Cowboys. He exchanged jibes with his friends who cheered for opposing teams. Shane had an amazing love for children, particularly his nieces, Skyler and Shea to name but a few. JAMES 'POPPY' MCLEOD
1922 - 2008
Mr. James 'Jim' Howard McLeod, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the age of 85. Jim is survived by his beloved wife Juanita 'Nita' McLeod. He also leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Beverley McLeod and Debbie (Rick) Englot; two grandsons, Drew James Englot and Trent Richard Englot; and one granddaughter, Devon Kimberley Englot. He is also survived by two brothers, William John 'Danny' (Sheila) McLeod of Kingston, Ontario and Norman Francis (Shirley) McLeod of Medicine Hat as well as several nephews and nieces. Jim was predeceased by his parents, John Samuel 'Scotty' McLeod and Anna Rowena McLeod; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Anne McLeod; two nephews, Jimmy and Ross McLeod and one niece, Margaret Smythe. Jim joined the Army along with his brother Danny, but transferred to the Air Force when his younger brother Ken, lied about his age and joined the Air Force. Jim worked for the C.P.R. from 1945 until his retirement in 1987. The last twelve years he served as General Chairman of the United Transportation Union for C.P. lines west. Much of his spare time was spent on the golf course either with friends, his son-in-law, Rick or his grandsons. He also loved to help his son-in-law coach his grandsons in hockey or watching his granddaughter play ringette. Mrs. Gail Dianne Merrick (nee Robbins) of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of Mr. Lorne Merrick and daughter of Elsie Robbins, passed away peacefully at her residence with her family by her side on Sunday, May 11, 2008, at the age of 52 years. Left to cherish Gail's memory with Lorne and Elsie are Gail's children: son, David Kinsey; daughter, Victoria Kinsey; grandchildren, Austyn and Brady; Lorne's children, William Merrick (April), Tina (Kevin) Steinke and their families. 1950 - 2008
Mr. James 'Jim' Lyle May of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, June 9, 2008, at the age of 57 years. Jim is survived by one son, Gram James May and grandson, Koby James Laychuk-May; sister, Peggy Wilson; nephews, Bryan and Sheldon Wilson; step-sons, Jesse and Shamus Keller as well as numerous other extended family and friends. Right from a young age, Jim displayed a passion for music. He played the bass and loved Country/Rock music and being on the road. WILLINA MERRITT
1917 - 2008
Mrs. Willina P. (Willie) Merritt of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Norman Merritt, peacefully passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the age of 90 years. Cherishing Willie's memory are three sons: Harvey (Jean) of Brentwood Bay, B.C., Larry of Medicine Hat and Lyle (Debbie) of Medicine Hat as well as seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Norman; mother and father; step-father; one sister and an uncle. Willie was born, raised and educated in Cabri, Saskatchewan. She married Norman Merritt in 1937 and they moved to Medicine Hat in 1941. This is where they made their home except for the five years they resided in Penticton, B.C. In honour of Willina's life, family joined together for a private Graveside Service at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, July 11, 2008 with Reverend Barrett Scheske officiating. LACY LYNN MARTIN
June 6, 1973 - July 19, 2008
With saddened hearts, the family of Lacy Martin announce her passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the age of 35 years, after a long and courageous battle with Breast Cancer. Lacy was born to Doreen and Gary Martin on June 6, 1973 in Swift Current, SK. Moving to Lethbridge, AB. in 1979, then to Medicine Hat, AB. in 1987. She graduated from CHHS in 1991, attending the U of L in 1992, and MH College in 2000, before graduating with honors and received her accreditation in Addictions Counselling. Lacy's love for the elderly took her to Sunnyside Nursing Home for 2 years and the Brooks Women's Shelter for 2 years. During that time she has worked in group home settings and was currently employed with Redi Enterprises. Lacy was a very avid reader and owned many books, and they were all read several times over. Lacy loved belly-dancing and enjoyed many hours of friendship over the past 4 years. She also enjoyed being involved with the drumming circle. Lacy fought a courageous battle against Breast Cancer for the past 4 years. She was our warrior, strong to the very end. We will miss you very much and we love you dearly. Along with her loving kitty, Freya, Lacy's memory will be treasured in the hearts of her surviving family; mother, Doreen Martin (Fred Aschenbrenner) and her father Gary Martin; sisters, Candis (Harvey) Wright and their daughter Raven of Seattle, Washington, Jennifer Martin of Medicine Hat, Amber Martin (Marc Tarapaski) of Edmonton; step-brothers, Jeff and Mark Aschenbrenner; grandmother, Martha Weinbender of Swift Current, SK.; uncles, George (Gail) Weinbender, Les (Phyllis) Weinbender, Ron (Karen) Weinbender of Swift Current, SK., Terry Weinbender of Vancouver, B.C.; aunts, Dianna Dwelle (Marvin Sykes) of Texas, USA., Melanie Weinbender (John Wentworth) of Swift Current, SK., Bonnie Martin of Pincher Creek, AB., and cousins, Kevin, Curtis, Jackie, Shannon, Kim, Scott, Crystal and Scott. EILEEN MANN
1927 - 2008
Mrs. Eileen Marion Mann, beloved wife of Mr. Dave Mann of Medicine Hat, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at the age of 81 years. Along with her loving husband, Eileen leaves to cherish her memory two children: Brian (Marie) Mann of Penticton, B.C. and their children, Trevor (Ashley) and Chad; Brenda Roth of Medicine Hat and her children, Tyler (Kaitlyn) and Justin; three brothers, Hec (Gladys) MacGregor, Don MacGregor, Jack (Anna) MacGregor; one sister-in-law, Pat (Dave) Anderson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; one brother, Bill (Rene) MacGregor; two sisters-in-law, Edith MacGregor and Audrey (Pete) Armstrong. Eileen was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She served a short time in the Navy before meeting and later marrying Dave on July 31, 1954. Eileen formed the Women's Ex-Service Club and was a past member of the Murray Chapter of the Eastern Star. Some of her most memorable times were spent with Dave travelling the countryside on their motorcycle. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Eileen's life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Monday, July 28, 2008, at 1:00 P.M. with Father Reg Alcock officiating.
