GERALD METCALF
1928 - 2010
Mr. Gerald (Jerry) Metcalf, beloved husband of 58 years to Mrs. Vivian Metcalf, passed away peacefully while in the comfortable presence of his wife and children at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Friday, July 23, 2010 at the age of 81 years. Jerry was born November 9, 1928 in Medicine Hat, a son to parents, Everett and Laura Metcalf. He was a loyal and dedicated employee with the Canadian Pacific Railway and held various positions over the years. After 39 years of service, he retired in 1987 as a Conductor on VIA Rail. Jerry remained active over the years and enjoyed the little things in life like fishing and camping, tending to his yard, playing cards and RVing with Vivian and family. He liked woodworking, rug hooking, curling, apple tree grafting and had a keen interest in trains. Jerry was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Royal Canadian Legion, United Transportation Union and the CP Pensioners Club. He was community minded and volunteered for worthy organizations that included the Navy League of Canada, RIDES, Canadian Diabetes Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Jerry was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his wife, Vivian; children, Blaine (Rhonda), Derryl (Beth), Debra (Norman), Melanie and Nadine (Mike); grandchildren, Nicole (Chris), Derek, Nathan, Evan and Kaitlyn and great-grandson, Dreyden. He is also survived by a brother, Lloyd; sisters, Priscilla (Al) and Colleen; sister-in-law, Vi Metcalf as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Gary Goran officiating. Private interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Jerry’s name may be made directly to the Alberta Lung Association, P.O. Box 4700, Station South, Edmonton, Alberta T6E 9Z9.
