DR. LORNA (JANE) LAIDLAW
July 3, 1915 - November 25, 2007
Dr. Lorna "Jane" Laidlaw of Medicine Hat passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2007, at the age of 92. Jane is survived by her nephew Bob (Maureen) Laidlaw of Bow Island along with their children: Heather (Rob) Hart and their children Ryler, Chase, Levi and Kassidy; Karla (Garth) Porteous and their children Kiara, Landon and Kale; Wes Laidlaw and Janice Laidlaw; and her niece Gwen (Ross) Fujino of Calgary and her sons: Duncan (Tracy) Keith and their son Jackson, and Morgan (Kathryn Hoffman) Keith. She was predeceased by her brother Bob Laidlaw during World War II; her parents Lorne N. Laidlaw K.C. and May Hall Laidlaw; her brother Lorne "Larry" Laidlaw and her sister-in-law Joan Laidlaw. Jane was born on July 3, 1915, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She attended schools in Medicine Hat until Grade 11 when she moved to Toronto where she graduated from Havergal Private School for Girls. Following graduation, she attended the Toronto Conservatory of Music to complete her degree in music and piano; long before the conservatory had received the commendation of "Royal" in its title. She then returned to Alberta where she entered the U of A Faculty of Home Economics. Upon graduation with this degree, she became "Martha Logan" for Swift's Company as their home economist. In 1942, at the outbreak of WWII, she entered the military in the Royal Canadian Air Force and moved up the ranks to become the Head of the Women's Division for Western Canada. One of her proudest moments was presenting the RCAF wings to her brother Larry. In 1946, she moved to Chicago to work for Lever Brothers. In 1948, she entered Medical School at the University of Alberta and graduated in the Class of 1953. Following her internship at the U of A, she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, for a one year Internal Medicine Residency. In 1957, she completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the Montreal General Hospital. Jane then returned to Alberta to work as an Internist at the U of A Hospital. In 1959, she attended the University of Colorado in Denver to become a doctor of psychiatry. After completing her studies, she was employed at Fort Logan Mental Hospital. In 1969, she and her good friend Ann Watson toured the U.S. and Canada for two years to find the ideal location for her next home, employment and retirement. Oyama, BC, became the choice as she could enjoy her hobbies of canoeing, sailing, swimming, golfing and playing tennis while working at the Vernon Mental Health Centre. Jane always dreamed of playing in a symphony, so at the age of 62 she enrolled in the Vernon Community Music School. She learned to successfully play the cello because an orchestra usually has a pianist. This was a good choice as Jane enjoyed many years as a cellist for the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. She later moved to Vernon and Blind Bay in British Columbia where she continued enjoying music and sports. In 1999, she moved back home to Medicine Hat so she could be closer to her family. Jane loved the prairies, visiting the ranch, swimming in the river, watching birds, learning to ride a motorbike at seventy-three and camping at her Lake Wabamun cabin. Some of her happiest days in her later years were playing a good game of bridge, watching sports on TV, and being entertained by her great-great nieces and nephews; especially at family picnics. She loved a good laugh and her sense of humor was relished in her last years. Aunt Jane's family visualized her enjoying the Grey Cup Game with Joan and Larry and rekindling the love of her life, Bonn Smith, who was lost in action in WWII. In honour of Jane, a private family service was held followed by a family gathering at the Hart's home where she spent many happy times with the children who always brightened her days. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Jane's name may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 833A Kingsway Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2X5 or to a charity of one's choice.
