VERNA IRENE IVERSON
1926 - 2010
It is with sadness that the family of Mrs. Verna Irene Iverson, beloved wife of Mr. Joseph Iverson, announce her passing at the Good Samaritan Society on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Verna’s journey through life began with her birth on January 24, 1926 in Gull Lake, Sask. She was the first born child of six, to proud parents Andrew and Lillian Moe. Verna was a small town farm girl, raised and schooled in Frontier, Sask. She met Joseph Iverson and was married at the family farm near Frontier on May 25, 1945. Farming was their way of life and soon after their marriage, they settled on their own farm near Bracken, Sask. With the busy day to day operations of the farm and raising a family, she always made sure everyone was well looked after and fed. Verna was quite a cook and her baking would melt in your mouth. From cakes and rossettes to Norwegian lefse, her baking was always sought after by the grandkids. In her younger years, she was deeply involved in 4H and helped the kids with their record books. Verna loved her life as a farmwife and took great pride in her family and home. This was evident in 1965, when they were the recipients of the Master Family Farm Award. She was so proud. She was a true friend who was quietly encouraging and gracious to those around her. She also had a competitive side and enjoyed watching sports on TV. She was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and had a friendly rivalry with Kevin, a Canadians fan. The simple things in life were enjoyable to Verna - camping and travelling to B.C. with family, doing needlepoint, crocheting, licorice allsorts (she loved licorice allsorts) and caligraphy - she had the neatest writing and was proud of her penmanship. In 1974, they retired to Medicine Hat where she became involved as a volunteer in many capacities. Verna will be cherished in the hearts of her children and grandchildren, son, Wayne (Faye) Iverson and their family, (Amy - Kyrie and Zachary), (Jared (Jill) - Ruby) and (Brent - Carter); daughter, Gloria (Kevin) McGivery and their family, (Sonja (Ryan Scott) and (Katrina); two sisters, Joyce (Dave) Findlay of Guelph, ON and Eileen Hill of Rosthern, Sask as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Lillian; and brothers, Don, Gord and Gillman. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor George Brandt officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Verna’s name may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 102 Crestwood Square One, 1865 Dunmore Road S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 1Z8 or to The Gideon’s, PO Box 3619 Stn Main Guelph, Ontario N1H 9Z9.
