MAY ASHTON
2004
Dearly beloved mother of Keith (Andrea) Ashton of Medicine Hat and Christine (Clive) Davidson of Wellington, Shropshire, England. May is also survived by her other family in England: Christine's daughter Amanda (David) and son Janus (Fiona), and one great-grandson Ben: May's first cousin and best friend Ann, Ann's niece Joan and her family, May's nephews Frank (Lorna), Terry (Ann), and niece Gillian (Alan) and their families. May was predeceased by Ann's sister Bertha. May was born in Heywood, Lancashire, England, orphaned at age six and raised by an aunt and uncle. She later moved to Rochdale and was employed as a secretary with British Rail, devoted her life to bringing up her son Keith, and worked in Manchester until her retirement in 1968. She lived in Cheadle, Cheshire until 1985 when, at age 72, she emigrated to Medicine Hat to be closer to Keith and his wife Andrea. May lived in her own home until 1995, when she moved to St. Joseph's Home, and was lovingly cared for by the nuns there until she moved into the Sunnyview wing at South Country Village in October, 1997. In December 2001, aged 88, she made one last trip to England to spend a lovely week reminiscing with family she had not seen for 16 years. May enjoyed walking in Strathcona Park and listening to classical music as evidenced by her large collection of classical CD records, and extensive knowledge of composers, orchestras and classical artists worldwide. May's unique personality, lovely smile, and interest in the British Royal Family, endeared her to the wonderful staff at Sunnyview, who gave her so much love during the last seven years of her life. However, nothing could compare with her joy on her 90th birthday in May 2003, when she was reunited with her daughter Christine who had been given up for adoption in 1950. For one glorious week, the family was together again after 53 years. According to May's wishes, cremation will take place with a private family service. An informal come-and-go celebration of May's life will be held in the downstairs lounge at Sunnyview Care Centre, 1720 Bell Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, August 24th from 2pm to 4pm, and all friends of May, Christine, Keith, and Andrea are very welcome to attend. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in May's memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of the Palliser Region, 631 Prospect Dr. S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 4C2 or to the Salvation Army, 164 Stratton Way S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 3R3. -'Gone but always in our hearts'
