Mrs. Madeleine "Susie" Raymonde Riffel of Medicine Hat,
beloved wife of Mr. Olie Riffel, passed away at the
Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Easter Sunday, April
8, 2007 at the age of 84 years.
The story of Madeleine's life begins in Ponteix,
Saskatchewan when she was born a daughter to Xavier and
Marie Anna Morel on November 9, 1922. She was
raised in both Ponteix and Val Marie where she attended
school. As a young lady she taught school in
the Val Marie area. A young man named Olie Riffel
was also teaching at the same school and a lifelong bond
was made. Madeleine and Olie were married by
Olie's brother, Father Tim Riffel, on September 8, 1949

her family in both home life and the family business,

For many years Madeleine ensured her children and family

handy with a needle and thread. Madeleine was
instrumental in organizing all the family outings and
holidays. Every
weekend the family would enjoy a picnic together.
In the summer months it was camping and it the winter it
was snowmobiling. The motorhome had a lot of miles
put on it as travel was extensive with all the trips she
organized.
Madeleine enjoyed life and laughter...she would laugh
endlessly at the comedy of "I Love Lucy" and had an
infectious smile that will be dearly missed.
Besides her husband, Olie, she is survived by her five

INEZ
RINDAHL
1916 - 2007

Inez Christina Rindahl peacefully passed away at the
South Country Village on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at
the age of 90 years.
Inez was born on the family farm in Bowell, Alberta on
August 13, 1916. She attended school in Redcliff
and Calgary, later moving to 3rd Street N.E. in Medicine
Hat.
Inez worked at Woolworths for a number of years.
While employed at Woolworths, Inez had the honour of
making sandwiches for the King and Queen when they
toured through town in 1939. She then accepted a
transfer to Calgary where she spent two years managing
the lunch counter. Inez worked at a bakery in
Victoria for two years during the war, and celebrated
victory over Japan; an explosion of liberty as she would
recall. Inez then accepted a short term
contract position with the C.P.R. in Calgary and Banff.
During the winter when the hotels were closed, Inez and
a group of female hotel employees rode the C.P.R. to
Montreal, paid their own way to New York City and then
embarked on a C.P.R. ship to Bermuda where they worked
in the C.P.R. Resort Hotels for 3 - 4 months.
While traveling to Bermuda, Inez found Christian Science
when she stopped in Syracuse, NY. Later, she
started as a clerk with the Hudsons Bay Company.
She continued employment there for the next fifteen
years and ended up in charge of security. In 1963,
she moved to San Francisco where she opened the
restaurant in the San Francisco Hilton. She
retired to Palm Springs, and was later called out of
retirement to help her brother, Norman.
Inez leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Fern
Petersen of Bruce Mines, ON.; one niece, Christine
Mizani of Sacramento, CA, as well as numerous friends
including special friend, Carol Ann Ross. She was
predeceased by one sister, Agnes Jean, and one brother,
Norman.
A Celebration of Inez's life will be held at Cook
Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., on
Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Bob
Findley officiating.

EDITH
ROBERTS
1915 - 2007

Edith Evelyn Roberts, beloved wife of the late Jack
Roberts, passed away on February 17, 2007 at the age of
91 years.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children Carol (Ove)
of Clinton, Ontario, John (Irene) of Olympia,
Washington, Bruce (Tammy) of Calgary, Alberta and Vicki
(Les) of Medicine Hat; six grandchildren and four great
grandchildren, Barry (Nancy) and their children, Maggie,
Evelyn and Claire, Janice, Heather (Jeff) and their
newborn Ellie Rose, Kelsey, Ian and Erin; also her
cousins Mildred, Fran (Doc) and Shirley. She was
predeceased by her husband Jack in 1966, her father
James Edmunds in 1957, her mother Annie in 1978, a
brother in infancy in 1919 and a sister in infancy in
1925. Edith was born in Lampman, Saskatchewan, on
November 29, 1915. Her family moved to Medicine Hat six
months later, where she would reside on the same street
for her lifetime.
For 18 years she worked for Ogilvie Mills where she
retired from in 1980. She would often walk to work and
on snowy days would slide down the coulee on a cardboard
sled, breaking her arm in the process. Once retired she
started traveling with many family members but mostly
with her daughter Carol. She spent many vacations in the
Hawaiian Islands and the islands on the west coast of
British Columbia. Her travels took her from coast to
coast in Canada and along the eastern and western
seaboards of the United States.
She was one of the few seventy year olds who would ride
Space Mountain in both Disneyland and Disneyworld! She
traveled on most of the BC and Washington State ferries.
She loved ships and cruised along the Maritimes and
rivers/canals of Europe. Edith once saw eight shows in
the London
theatre district while touring England on a Britrail
Pass. Her favorite country was The Netherlands, a
country she knew well. She also visited Belgium,
Germany, Denmark and Sweden. At age 85, her trip to
Denmark was a special time as she saw most of the
country and stayed with local people. Her biggest trip
of all was to Australia and New Zealand for Expo 88. One
of her great concerns was not being able to live to see
the Calgary Olympics in 1988. This was short-lived!
Edith learned to use the computer in her eighties and
was a prolific emailer. She had a love for cats, and had
many over the years. Her TV usually had a news channel
on, as she was always interested in what was going on in
the world. Before her fall that broke her hip and
shoulder she looked forward to her walks downtown with
her friend and neighbor Eve. For many, many years she
ate breakfast or lunch, three times a week, with Vicki
and Les. They patronized almost every restaurant in
Medicine Hat. In the last few years she looked forward
to Sundays for coffee at Tim Hortons and for Tuesdays
for Ruth's great meals.
A private family memorial service and interment will be
held at a later date.

WILLIAM WILSON
RAE
1917 - 2006

William Wilson Rae passed away peacefully on February
24, 2006 at the age of 88 years after a lengthy illness.
Bill was a longtime resident of Medicine Hat and spent
his whole life in the area. He was predeceased by his
wife Ethel (Bunty) in 1997; his brother, Bob and
his parents, James and Katherine. He is fondly
remembered by his three sons, William Jr. (Karen) of
Medicine Hat; David (Jeanette) and Donald (Donna)
of Calgary, as well as seven grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews. Bill grew up on a farm just north of
Crescent Heights. As a young boy he had a natural talent
for things mechanical, often tinkering with the family
car or keeping the old irrigation pump running. In 1941,
he volunteered to join the RCAF and was stationed in
England serving as a fitter-armourer. Upon returning to
care for his parents, he took over the family farm. In
1948, he married Bunty and together they raised kids,
hogs, horses, cows, corn, registered seed potatoes and
anything they could to make a living. In 1953, he sold
the farm and went to work at J.I. Case as a heavy duty
mechanic. Later, he
started his own business doing general mechanical work.
Often in the evening and on weekends he could be found
at a farmer's place in the area repairing their tractor
or baler. In 1966, Bill went to work in the "patch" for
North Canadian Oils, Canadian Homestead, ICG Resources,
and finally as field superintendent for Bralorne
Resources. He ran a tight ship and enjoyed the
challenges he encountered but especially the many
friends he made over the years.
The family wishes to thank the Leisure Way Group Home
for their compassionate care of Bill over the past
several years.
