WILLIAM
BALOWSKY
1915 - 2008

Mr. William (Bill) Wilfred Balowsky, beloved husband of
Mrs. Eleanor Balowsky of Medicine Hat, passed away at
the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Friday, August 1,
2008, at the age of 92 years, just short of his 93rd
Birthday.
Bill was born on August 10, 1915, and was raised and
went to school in Vidora, SK. On November 18, 1944, he
married the love of his life, Eleanor Priestley in
Montreal, Quebec, and together they shared in over 63
years of married life.
Bill was a dedicated and long time member of Fifth
Avenue Memorial United Church. He was an industrious man
and worked diligently at whatever came his way. For
years, he was a house decorator, primarily painting was
his trade. In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed fishing and
dancing with Eleanor. Bill was a long time member of the
Royal Canadian Legion and the Moose Lodge. His past
participation in the Elks and the Eagles Clubs was only
a testament of his love for community involvement. An
honor for Bill, was to give a dear friend (Velva) away
at her wedding since her father had passed away, she
requested that Bill do the honors. A life achievement
was celebrating his marriage of 60 years to Eleanor and
both of their 90th Birthdays.
Bill will be forever missed by Eleanor, his long time
companion, his caregiver and his driver. He also leaves
to cherish his memory his many cousins, in particular
Rose Gasho of North Dakota and Ann Marie Mower of
Kalispell, Montana. Bill was predeceased by his father,
August Balowsky and numerous cousins.
A graveside service celebrating Bill’s life, will be
held on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 11:00 A.M., at the
family plot in Hillside Cemetery, with Gary Goran
officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion, No. 17 will be
in attendance to conduct a Poppy Service in honor of
their fallen comrade.

the charity of one’s choice.

LEONARD
BONDY
1914 - 2008

It is with sadness that the family of Leonard Bondy,
announce his passing at the Good Samaritan Society on
Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the age of 93 years.
Leonard was born in Fredonia, North Dakota on September
24, 1914. He was raised on a farm near Walsh where he
attended school. He married Juliadean Ririe on May 31,
1947 and spent 43 years of marriage together. During his
working career, he first gained employment with Eaton's
in 1955, working in the security division before
retiring from there in 1977. At this time he began
working for the Lethbridge Research Station until 1986.
He did some work on a part time basis with Shell Canada
as a mechanic. This explains why Leonard loved to
‘tinker’, although he never really fixed anything. He
loved reading, doing crossword puzzles and never lost
hope to win the “big one”. Among many things, he was
proud of his yard and garden and enjoyed “putzing”
around and helping others. As a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, helping others came
natural to him. He served his nation while in service
for the Army from 1939 to 1945. During this time while
serving abroad, he had the opportunity to meet the
Princess, who is now the Queen, and listened as she
praised their service (army). Leonard will also be
praised when the Royal Canadian Legion perform their
Poppy Service for their departed comrade. He will always
be remembered for being unique! When asked how he was,
“miserable” was always his response (always with a
smile)...which meant he was fine. “He’s not miserable
anymore”.
Leonard was proud of his family and was the beloved
gran’pa of Talya and Darcy Lutz; he will be remembered
by a son, Jeffrey (Trudy) Bondy of New Brunswick; a
daughter, Starr Shanks of Edmonton. He is also survived
by his step-children, Sharley (Gilbert) Sheridan of
Lethbridge, Nathan Smith of Stillwater, MN, Monte
(Janet) Smith of Santa Quin, Utah and Lennidean (Steve)
Christensen of Brigham City, Utah; a brother, Walter
Bondarenko of Calgary and a special nephew, Otto
Palfenier of Calgary and a special niece, Dolly Sparks
of Winnipeg as well as numerous grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Leonard was
predeceased by his parents, Rodion and Dorothy
Bondarenko; sisters, Lydia Field, Zenna Palfenier, Clara
Sparks; a brother, Victor Bondarenko and his former wife
and friend, Juliadean Bondy.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook
Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W.,
Medicine Hat on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 from 10:00 a.m.
to 10:55 a.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00
a.m. with Elder Ben Bullock conducting. Interment will
follow at Hillside Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Leonard’s
name may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke

HILDA
BODNER
1923 - 2008

Mrs. Hilda Bodner, beloved wife of the late Mr. Frank
Bodner, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional
Hospital on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the age of 84
years.
Hilda was born on September 18, 1923 in Hungary, one of
eight children born to George and Mary Andreas. In 1930,
she immigrated to Canada along with two brothers and
parents. The family first settled in the Richmound/Horsham
area in Saskatchewan where five more children were born
and completed their family. Following the untimely death
of her father, the family moved to Maple Creek. While
there, she met her future husband, Ivor Johnson. In 1943
they were married and began their life farming south of
Richmound until 1968 when Ivor passed away. Hilda then
moved to Medicine Hat where she worked at the Teeoda
Lodge. True love found Hilda a second time when she was
introduced to Frank Bodner. They were married in 1974
and each were blessed with a new family. Hilda was an
active member of Gordon Memorial United Church in
Redcliff. Her sense of community and generosity to
others strengthened the relationships that she built
with many people...both young and old. People gravitated
towards her as she was well loved and respected. Hilda
enjoyed gardening and had quite a green thumb! Her
garden was home to many of God's creatures including
birds, deer and bunnies. The deer helped themselves to
the fresh tomatoes...the bunnies nestled in their beds
under the trees and the birds were well fed. Her caring
nature made sure they all felt welcome.
As a life-long learner, Hilda was an achiever. She never
missed an opportunity to learn whether it was by means
of reading books, watching documentaries or by
interacting with people, her knowledge was vast. She was
often called upon for advice in a variety of subjects
because if anyone knew...it was her. Of all the
qualities that Hilda possessed, it was her value of
family that will be remembered the most. Although ill,
her determination to see her family through Christmas
prevailed. It was time well spent and will be forever
cherished in the hearts of her children, Mary (Joe)
Walsh of Maple Creek and
Rita Smith (Phillip Hogg) of Borden, Saskatchewan;
grandchildren, Talla (Marc) Perkins, Tricia (Clark)
Gawryluik and Tracey (Doug) Martinook; Sean (Barbara)
Smith, Ivor Smith, Jeannine (Kelley) Smith-Perry and
Donna Smith and 10 great-grandchildren. Hilda will be
missed by Frank's children whom she equally loved, Merv
(Marilyn) Bodner of Lanigan, Saskatchewan and their
children, Ray Bodner and Michele (Kelly) Skorlatowski;
Linda (Frank) Wilkinson and their children Stanley
(Charlene) Wilkinson, Theresa (Rahim) Omran and Holly
Wilkinson as well as six great-grandchildren. She is
also survived by her brothers and sisters, George
(Winnie) Andreas of Maple Creek, SK., Joe (Melanie)
Andreas of Penticton, B.C., Pat (Lenore) Andreas of
Regina, Ida (Norm) Senger of Langley, B.C., Erna Glover
and Margaret Andreas both of Nanaimo, B.C. as well as
numerous nieces and nephews. Hilda was predeceased by
her parents, George and Mary Andreas Kaytar; first
husband, Ivor Johnson; second husband, Frank Bodner;
brother, Albert Andreas and a grandson, Tommy Bodner.
The Funeral Service will be held at Gordon Memorial
United Church, 401 - 2nd Street S.E., Redcliff on
Monday, January 14, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend
Blaine Schaufele officiating. Interment will take place
in the Maple Creek Cemetery at a later date.

LAWRENCE
BRUSKY
1920 - 2008

Lawrence Brusky passed away suddenly on January 9, 2008
at the age of 87 years.
Lawrence is survived by his son, LaVerne and
daughter-in-law, Edna; two grand daughters, Terry and
Tina (Darren) Shearer; two great-grandchildren, Rease
and Keana; a brother, Floyd (Amy); one
sister-in-law, Mary (Adolf) Brusky, as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie in 1987; his
father, Peter in 1976; his mother, Martha in 1991; his
sister, Lida "Fritz" in 1932, and a brother, Adolf in
1990.
Lawrence was born on April 9, 1920, on a farm north of
Hatton, SK., and received his education at Observation
School. In September of 1940, he joined the army. In
1942, he married the former Elsie Beck. After receiving
his discharge from the army, they did various jobs. They
eventually built a house and a farm on the outskirts of
Schuler, and later on in life, moved to Medicine Hat for
their retirement. Lawrence loved all sports. He curled
everywhere and brought home numerous trophies. Lawrence
loved baseball, playing the positions of pitcher and
first baseman for the Schuler team. He pitched their way
to the championship for the FIRST Sask-Alta League
Tournament in 1951, and won the cup at the finals in
Richmound.
Grandpa's love for his son showed in every way. They
spent a lot of time together checking on the cows, crops
and discussing farm business. They both treasured and
enjoyed every moment. With Edna, it was laughter and
jokes they shared. Together they always found humour in
any situation or
crisis around the farm. Lawrence loved his
granddaughters, Terry and Tina very much...he was so
proud of both, and loved to tease and joke around with
them. When Darren came into the picture, he became his
grandson from day one - finally, another guy to talk
about "guy stuff". They clicked and
loved each other instantly. He especially loved his
great-grandchildren, Rease and Keane. They talked his
ears off constantly and enjoyed his attention. He also
gave his attention and love to all our pets throughout
the years, but the only pet that really made him smile
and touched his heart, was Munchie.
Lawrence was very independent, doing his own driving,
cooking, canning and house keeping until the time of his
passing. Throughout the years, he never missed branding
time at the farm, and always took a great interest in
farming and cattle. Lawrence spent most of his time at
the farm, cattle sales or fishing with Floyd or his
friends. He will be remembered by all for his good
spirits and Joviality, his sly sense of humor, and his
love for fishing and cattle. He will be missed by all
very much.
Those wishing to pay their respects and watch a video
tribute of Lawrence's life, are invited to meet at Cook
Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W.,
Medicine Hat on Sunday, January 13, 2008 from 7:00 p.m.
to 9:00 p.m. A Private Family Graveside Service will be
held on Monday at Hillside
Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Lawrence¹s
name may be made directly to the charity of one's

to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He

continued through to the Twilighter's League, of which
he coached for twenty-four years and would have
continued had his health been better. He coached
hundreds of kids in his lifetime - some from 6 years old
until in their late 40's. He was so proud to have
his family and friends watch him throw out the first
pitch at the Nationals a few years ago. We were
extremely honoured when our 'Dad' received the award of
'Sportsman of the Year' in 1970. He loved life and
he loved his family and he was a wonderful husband,

KRISTY DAWN
BARR
2004
Kristy went to be with the angels in heaven on Thursday,
October 14, 2004, at the age of 22 years, beloved
daughter of George and Shelley Barr and very special
sister of Karly (Geoff) Hall. Along with her immediate
family, Kristy's precious memory will be cherished by
her grandmothers, Iona Harvey
and Mary Barr; numerous other extended family members as
well as a very special friend, Amy Gagnier and all of
the caregivers that came into Kristy's life and helped
her to be a part of the community. There are people in
this world that are sent here with a very special
purpose, Kristy was one of these people. Kristy was a
ray of sunlight shining brightly wherever she went. She
had a way of bringing people together, spreading joy and
happiness. The group of friends Kristy enjoyed her
leisure time with meant so much to her and we know her
friends will miss her dearly. One of Kristy's favorite
activities was swimming. She loved the water and the
freedom it gave her. Kristy would sing and dance to the
music she created on her DJ mixer. Many hours were spent
outside on her swing playing her guitar, a sound we will
truly miss. Kristy loved life and all that it offered as
was evident through her love of laughter. She was a
shining example of how to triumph over great challenges
and was perfect in our eyes in every way. Kristy was an
inspiration to us and so many others, paving
the way for change. She was such a great teacher of how
to spread love in the world and she would want us to say
this, "The next time you encounter someone with a
disability, remember - ALL IT TAKES IS A SMILE."
"We love you sweetie, you are forever in our hearts. Fly
little angel ... fly!"
"Little sister", you are someone who is so very close to
my heart. I love you so much and nothing can ever take
away the deep feelings I have for you. Our relationship
as sisters was very unique and only you and I know the
special bond we had. I am so thankful for the past
year we shared together. I was able to come home and be
with you and spend precious time with you. We spent many
days hugging (you gave the best hugs sis), laughing,
dancing, listening to music, watching your favorite
shows, playing ball, shopping, and doing the things in
life you so much enjoyed. We had so much fun together
and that is what I will hold onto forever and ever. I
wish I could hold you one more time and tell you that I
love you but I know we will see each other again and the
next hug we have I will never let go.
"Hugs and kisses for you my "little angel"
