ESTHER C. L. ANDERSON
1919 - 2007

Esther Charlotte Louise Anderson of Medicine Hat, passed away while in the comfort of her home with her daughter, Carol Ann Ross and Denise Robert (Grande Prairie) by her side on Friday, March 9, 2007 at the age of 87 years.
Esther was born in Box Springs, AB. on the family homestead.  She
started her lifelong sales career selling jewelry at Woolworth's in Medicine Hat.  After her marriage to Curtis Patrick Ross (Bow Island) they moved to Calgary where Carol Ann was born.  While Curtis served in the RCAF,  as many women did during WWII, Esther stepped in to fill a man's job and sold advertising for the CALGARY ALBERTAN and was recruited to sell life insurance for Canada Life Assurance Co.  In 1945, she and Carol Ann moved to Medicine Hat where she continued to sell insurance and then in 1955 moved back to Calgary.  In the mid 1960's, she assumed the role of Marketing and Public Relations for the new Holiday Inn and her campaign promoting it as the "Home of the Outdoor Sportsman" won a North American sales award. Esther organized the grand opening of the Sheraton Hotel in Calgary and stayed on to market the property.  In 1970, she returned to Medicine Hat to look after her mother.  From here she went on the road as the first "female carpetbagger" selling a furniture line; territory covering B.C. and Alberta. She then was a manufacturers' rep for lighting fixtures and fireplace accessories; territory B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.
She married Harold C. Torgerson in 1975 and retired in 1976.  The home on Maple Avenue was a
buzz with entertaining; their lawn parties were famous.  During this time she was part of the Ladies Shrine Clown Unit and Daughters of the Nile.
They became "snowbirds" and wintered in Rancho Mirage, CA., where they were active ambassadors for Alberta Tourism, traveling to Arizona, Texas and Southern California promoting Alberta.  Esther's famous quote was: "Live life to the fullest and give back where you can".  During the 1940's, she
was a founding member of the Quota Club in Medicine Hat, and always active in the Vasa Lodge (setting a provincial record for most memberships sold). Northwest Travelers Association presented her in 2006, with an award for 35 years continuous membership.  Other club affiliations included President of the Canadian Club and Junior Achievement, Medicine Hat Historical Society, but her real love was the Multicultural Folk Arts Council.  Her proudest achievement was implementing the plan for the Gazebo in Rotary Park. Initially she wanted to build a gazebo in her back yard but then decided to
enlarge the concept and share it with the citizens of Medicine Hat.  Esther sang with the Veiner Singers and loved dancing.  Whenever the music started, she was the first to be asked to dance and sailed around the floor.  To round out her dancing enjoyment, she took tap dancing lessons on the desert.
In the early 1990's, Esther participated in a local Elementary School History Program.  She thrilled students with stories of "the olden days" in Medicine Hat.  Pupils were fascinated with her storytelling, period dress and colorful props.  In addition, modeling became another "string on her bow" when she modeled for Raber's Fashions.  She is featured in the mural above the old store.  Esther was a class-taught student of Christian Science, active in the Calgary and Medicine Hat churches.  Esther shot from
the hip - she was honest, trustworthy, dependable, generous, kind with a razor sharp wit.  She was the embodiment of networking; always putting people together for mutual good.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Ann Ross, Padey (nee MacKenzie) LaPointe (Gilles) of Bonnyville, AB.; Cathy (John) Sutter of Medicine Hat; Nattacia (Jurgen) Mantei of Calgary;  George
(Lynn Howard) MacKenzie of Calgary; Bruce (Lisa) MacKenzie of Whiterock, B.C.; Carl (Helena) Torgerson of Medicine Hat, Randy (Melinda) Torgerson of Bradenton, Florida; sisters-in-law, Florence (Alan) Anderson of Medicine Hat, Ethel (Phil) Ross of Lethbridge, Marg (Carl) Ross of Surrey, B.C.,
Ressa Raber of Medicine Hat; nephews, John (Laurie) Anderson of Calgary and Doug (Karen) Anderson of Sherwood Park as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her parents Anna Sophia and John Frederick Anderson; husband Malcolm G. MacKenzie and brother Alan Frederick Anderson.
In Esther's honour, a Celebration of Life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Mr. Richard Worden officiating.

MAY ASHTON
2004
Dearly beloved mother of Keith (Andrea) Ashton of Medicine Hat and Christine (Clive) Davidson of Wellington, Shropshire, England. May is also survived by her other family in England: Christine's daughter Amanda (David) and son Janus (Fiona), and one great-grandson Ben: May's first cousin and best friend Ann, Ann's niece Joan and her family, May's nephews Frank (Lorna), Terry (Ann), and niece Gillian (Alan) and their families. May was predeceased by Ann's sister Bertha.  May was born in Heywood, Lancashire, England, orphaned at age six and raised by an aunt and uncle. She later moved to Rochdale and was employed as a secretary with British Rail, devoted her life to bringing up her son Keith, and worked in Manchester until her retirement in 1968. She lived in Cheadle, Cheshire until 1985 when, at age 72, she emigrated to Medicine Hat to be closer to Keith and his wife Andrea.
May lived in her own home until 1995, when she moved to St. Joseph's Home, and was lovingly cared for by the nuns there until she moved into the Sunnyview wing at South Country Village in October, 1997. In December 2001, aged 88, she made one last trip to England to spend a lovely week reminiscing with family she had not seen for 16 years. May enjoyed walking in Strathcona Park and listening to classical music as evidenced by her large collection of classical CD records, and extensive knowledge of composers, orchestras and classical artists worldwide. May's unique personality, lovely smile, and interest in the British Royal Family, endeared her to the wonderful staff at Sunnyview, who gave her so much love during the last seven years of her life. However, nothing could compare with her joy on her 90th birthday in May 2003, when she was reunited with her daughter Christine who had been given up for adoption in 1950. For one glorious week, the family was together again after 53 years.
According to May's wishes, cremation will take place with a private family service. An informal come-and-go celebration of May's life will be held in the downstairs lounge at Sunnyview Care Centre, 1720 Bell Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, August 24th from 2pm to 4pm, and all friends of May, Christine, Keith, and Andrea are very welcome to attend. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in May's memory may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of the Palliser Region, 631 Prospect Dr. S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 4C2 or to the Salvation Army, 164 Stratton Way S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 3R3.
